How to Get a New York Fishing License

Who Needs a License?

Anyone 16 years and older must have a valid freshwater fishing license to fish in freshwater in New York State. This applies to both residents and non-residents. Whether you’re casting your line in rivers, lakes, ponds, or streams, a fishing license is essential.  Freshwater fishing licenses are not required to fish in saltwater, which includes ocean beaches, ocean boats, and the Hudson River.

Specific Requirements:

  1. Residents: If you’re a New York resident aged 16 to 69 years, you’ll need a fishing license to enjoy freshwater fishing. Additionally, if you plan to fish for trout, you’ll require a trout stamp.
  2. Non-Residents: Visitors aged 16 and up must also obtain a non-resident fishing license to fish in New York’s freshwater bodies. Like residents, non-residents targeting trout need a trout stamp as well.
  3. Senior Anglers: Resident anglers aged 70 and over are exempt from needing a fishing license or trout stamp.

License and Stamp Fees

Here are the current fees for fishing licenses and stamps:

  • Resident Fishing License: $25 (ages 16-69), $5 (ages 70+)
  • Non-Resident Fishing License: $50
  • 7-Day Non-Resident License: $28
  • 1-Day Non-Resident License: $10
  • Lifetime Licenses: Available to residents only
  • Free/Reduced Fee Licenses: Eligible for active duty military, military veterans with 40% or greater disability, senior citizens (70+), legally blind individuals, and non-resident students attending a New York State college or university full-time.

How to Obtain Your License

You have three options:

  • Fishing during designated Free Fishing Days.
  • Participating in a free learn-to-fish clinic.
  • A resident landowner primarily engaged in farming (including lessees and immediate family members) when fishing on farm lands they are occupying and cultivating.
