Venture Overview
Where to Stay: Stone Cottages at Bear Mountain
Where to Dine:
For dinner, you can’t beat the view and atmosphere of the 1915 restaurant in the Bear Mountain Lodge. The food is the best of traditional American cuisine, and the prices are very reasonable for this destination dining experience.
For lunch, try Bear Mountain Pizza in Fort Montgomery. This brick-oven pizzeria has everything from traditional Italian recipes to “sexy pizza with cauliflower.” The location on Highway 9W makes this location convenient for the day’s activities.
For breakfast, if you book your trip during the second Sunday of the month, you can plan for brunch at the 1915 Restaurant in the Bear Mountain Lodge. If you want to start your outdoor adventures earlier, try Andy’s Diner in Highland Falls. Since 1903 Andy’s has been a favorite for locals, Hudson Valley adventurers, and West Point cadets and families. The food can’t be beaten. Your best bet is to dine early before hungry Cadets and families arrive.

Venture Plan: Rustic Summer Cabin REntal
Cabin rentals in the Hudson Valley are a perfect way to get away from the city, work, and school and get immersed in the great outdoors, without sacrificing convenience and safety. The Ashokan Reservoir region Northwest of the City of Kingston is ideal because it is well beyond the crowds and traffic, but close enough to convenient towns.
Venture Overview
VRBO offers the best opportunities for cabin rentals, but be sure to make your summer plans well in advance. January is the best time to book these cabins. Rates start around $125 per night for a convenient cabin with all of the comforts of home in a great location.
Where to Dine:
Dinner: The Reservoir Inn offers the a wide variety of traditional and modern menu items while it is settled into a 100 year old stonework lodge right in the center of the outdoor activities. For a night on the town, head into Kingston and check out Ole Savannah for Southern table dining and nightlife on the Kingston Waterfront.
For lunch, Village Pizza is right by the Ashokan Reservoir. This restaurant is quick not too expensive, and features sandwiches and more than just Pizza.
Summer Outdoor Activities
Kaatersville Falls Hike is a beautiful, short hike to multiple waterfalls in the region. This hike connects to additional trails that offers phenomenal photography, birdwatching, and outdoor exercise opportunities.
The hike to Boulder Rock and Catskill Mountain House is a moderate difficulty, but worthwhile hike with beautiful views and a fun “bouldering” section.
Biking the 22 Mile round-trip Ashokan Trailhead. Start at the Ashokan Rail Station and enjoy beautiful views of the entire Ashokan reservoir. Don’t worry if you did not bring your bike, Overlook Bicycles has a bike rental shop at this location.

Venture Plan: Fall color Cabin Rental
The Hudson Valley is famous for its phenomenal fall color. A cabin rental is the best way to immerse yourself in the quiet beauty of the Hudson Valley.
Venture Overview
The trip to the Albany/Capital region in the Northern part of the Hudson Valley is worth it because the northern climate sees the most brilliant fall color earlier in the fall season.
Where to Dine:
Dinner: Garden Bistro 24 Near Slingerlands and the Pine Hollow Arboretum is a great choice for dinner.
Lunch: Balderdash Cellars in Richmond, MA at the turnaround point of your drive West on I-90.
Take a look at these three short walks or all-day destinations while driving the beautiful scenery of the I-90 corridor heading toward Stockbridge, MA:
1. For a simple stroll through the fall color complete with breathtaking photo ops check out Pine Hollow Arboretum near Albany.
2. For a relaxed stroll through the fall color complete with dining and wine, check out Hilltop Orchards in Richmond, MA.
3. For all-day fall color that is still not too far from the Albany Area, check out the Massachusetts Audobon Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
While the Eastern Route out of Albany on I-90 offers the best hiking opportunities because of the Berkshire Mountains if you’re looking for a driving trip through the Fall color, check out Route 29 heading West from Saratoga Springs. This is a simple drive with no particular end-point, and you can’t beat the dining in Saratoga on your way back to your cabin.

Venture Plan: Cabin rental for Spring Waterfalls
The Hudson Valley has year-round beautiful waterfalls, but nothing beats waterfalls in the Spring. In the early spring the runofff from melting snow creates the most intense waterfall exepriences. Prepare yourself for soggy ground and even flash-flooding if you stray away from well-worn trails. While the runoff is the highest, that waterfalls are the greatest, the ground is soggy, the nights are cold, and this is NOT the season to enjoy Hudson Valley adventures in a tent. A cabin is your best bet.
Venture Overview
As the name implies, some of the best waterfalls in the Hudson Valley are located in and around the Wappingers Falls area. There are two great, boutique choices for rustic cabins in the area that will place you at one with nature with convenient access to the regions best waterfalls and dining options.
Rustic Cabin Rentals: Mills-Norie State Park has only 10 rustic cabins, so make your reservation early (January or February would be best).
Resort Cabin Rentals: The Jellystone Park in Gardiner, NY is your best bet for resort cabin rentals. Even if you are not a fan of Yogi Bear (but who isn’t?), this resort is not just for kids. You’ll find comfortable cabins with resort amenities, minutes away from the Hudson Valley’s greatest attractions.
Waterfalls:
1. The bridge over Wappingers Creek in the town of Wappingers Falls offers a great view of this quaint waterfall that turns into a gusher in the Spring. Any hiking here will be urban hiking, but you have the convenience of great restaurants in the town.
2. Fishkill Overlook Falls on Main Street in Beacon offers a similar dramatic view of a waterfall in an urban setting.
3. For a hike to a waterfall that will be absolutely legendary in the Spring, make the short trip down to Harriman State Park and visit the Cascade of Slid Waterfall. You will not be disappointed in the falls or the hike. Follow the yellow trail markers less than 1 mile to the waterfall.
