Glamour Camping (Glamping)

The Hudson Valley has a variety of campgrounds for comfortable and adventurous tent camping.  Campgrounds include resorts, county parks, and backcountry trails.

There are hundreds of pieces of nifty camping gear you can get, but all you really need is blankets or a sleeping bag, a tent, and a tent.  You can even keep cooking to a “bear” minimum by eating most of your meals in restaurants.  Check out our gear guide for the best deals on the necessities for camping in comfort.

For the best resort experience including a water park, playground, and scheduled activities, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Lazy River in Gardiner, NY offers a phenomenal tent camping experience.  This campground is not rustic or back-country, it’s more like halfway between Disneyland and camping in a fun suburban neighborhood.

The Newburgh KOA is another resort camping experience in the Hudson Valley.  This campground is a bit more rustic and a bit more outdoorsy compared to the Jellystone Campground in Gardiner.  A tent camping adventure at the Newburgh KOA is accessible via the Short Line Bus service from NYC to Newburgh, then a cab ride to and from the Campground from the Newburgh bus stop.

Malouf’s Mountain Campground on Mt. Beacon offers a fantastic backcountry experience with a few luxuries, complete with a bathhouse and even a grocery service.  This campsite is very accessible from the Beacon Metro North Station.

Rustic Camping

Winding Hills County Park in Montgomery, New York (near Newburgh) offers tent camping with large campsites, plenty of trees, with a lake for camping, boating, fishing, and miles of hiking trails.

Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park is close to NYC, Westchester, and Long Island, but this massive park is so rustic and beautiful that you will feel like you are at one with nature in the great outdoors.  The Beaver Pond Campground offers over 100 campsites, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and a beach with lifeguards during the summer.  You will need a car to get to this campground and get around the activities in this massive campground.

Sebago Beach is closed for the season.

Clarence Fahnestock State Park between Beacon and Brewster on the Taconic State Parkway is the big park with a funny name and amazing backwoods camping adventures.  This park has a little bit of everything including campsites, over 10 miles of hiking trails, lakes with abundant fishing, boat rentals, and more.

More Options for Camping Adventures

Hipcamp.com is like Airbnb for campsites.  Most Hipcamp campsites are on someone’s private land, property, or yard.  Many campsites have amenities and friendly family hosts that make for a very enjoyable experience without the production of a full campground.  Hipcamp has gotten so “hip” that it’s realy investors include Will Smith and Jay-Z.

Rvshare.com is similar to an Airbnb for RVs.  This opens a world of possibilities, but the simplest are RVshare’s “destination deliveries”, which means the RV will be delivered to a campground of your choice for your convenience.
